Allá por el mes de marzo un compañero de otro foro me comentó sobre la hazaña del Plus Ultra, explicándome muchos puntos importantes de la aventura de aquellos muchachos atrevidos y de formidable ánimo, aquellos que desafiaron el Atlántico para llegarse a la Buenos Aires lejana y exótica que los recibió cuan héroes nacionales. Todo esto pasaba en 1926.
El compi, con suma amabilidad, me facilitó información adicional sobre ese hito histórico de importancia mundial. Y un dato que desconocía: el Plus Ultra, aquella aeronave fabulosa que hizo soñar a tantos millones y que aún es motivo de admiración de este y aquel lado del océano que aun nos une estaba en el Museo Enrique Udaondo en la ciudad de Luján.
Luján es una pequeña localidad a 70 km de Buenos Aires.
Tranquila, apacible. Con pocos habitantes que viven ( todos ) del peregrinar continuo de millones de argentinos que al año atiborran la basílica en busca de consuelo, pedidos, agradecimientos y rezos. Luján es el centro devocional mas importante de Argentina. Poco hay que hacer en Luján luego de la visita a la basílica: un par de recreos para el asado, una feria variopinta de recuerdos y objetos, un museo - donde está el Plus Ultra -; un organillero, el último que queda en mi país.
Y con una muy sencilla estación de ómnibus con un Orient manchado por las palomas y un Citizen que por las dudas de temerse fuera del COSC tiene dos horas diferentes en sus caras.

La Basílica no es en sí un edificio imponente - a mi modo de ver.... hay otras opiniones -. Los hay en Argentina mas espectaculares. Me parece que la Basílica responde bastante a su historia y a los vaivenes que sufrió en los cambios de proyecto y estilo. El edificio fue planeado como neogótico pero al momento de su finalización ( 1890-1935 ) respondía mas al movimiento ecléctico tan en boga en mi país.
La basílica tiene dos relojes: dos relojes gemelos mecánicos Paul Odovey de dos caras que accionan por un mecanismo eléctrico el carrillón de 15 campanas.... cuando andan bien. Al momento que fui cada reloj hacía lo suyo: vagar fluidamente por entre las campanadas sin demasiado tino ni sentido.

No quería dejar pasar la ocasión de mostrarles a las dos estrellas máximas del Museo: los caballos Gato y Mancha.Estos caballos forman parte del inconsciente colectivo argentino como el mate, los alfajores, el choripán y el dulce de leche.
Son dos caballos que recorrieron 21 mil km uniendo Buenos Aires con New York entre 1925 y 1928 ( la travesía duró 3 años y 4 meses ). El jinete fue el suizo Aimé Tschiffely... ¡¡¡ miren que hay gente loca !!! Estos caballos tienen, además, un record aún que no ha sido superado: son los únicos caballos que han podido cruzar sin asistencia mecánica el Paso del Cóndor a 5900 metros de altura.
